KAMPALA, Nov 11 (Reuters) - A Ugandan student died on Friday during a riot over rises in fees at Kampala's main university, a police spokesman said.
Students at Makerere University, angered by a rise in the cost of re-sitting exams, destroyed property and set at least two cars on fire, witnesses said.
Police broke up the protest using tear gas.
"One young man was trampled to death as he and his colleagues tried to run away," said police spokesman Assuman Mugenyi. He denied a report on the local Daily Monitor newspaper's web site that the student was shot by officers.
"The police are not going to tolerate any unlawful riots," Mugenyi said, adding that police would be deployed at the campus until the situation had "normalised".
